Get Your Dream Job This Year

Are you ready to get that dream job this year? Here are five ways to make it happen.

As we transition from a pandemic to an epidemic, do you feel it is finally time to take that leap and make your next job the one you’ve always been waiting for? So many of us are burned out, have quit our jobs during The Great Resignation, or feel stuck, but we don’t know how to make a change. Here are five steps to help you gain clarity.

Step 1: Make a List of What You Don’t Like About your Current Job.
Chances are, this list will be long. Focus on big picture issues. Overlook details like the coffee is “meh” unless these small items add up to a bigger problem such as company culture. Figure out what you are currently missing in your current work life that is making you unhappy.

Step 2: Visualize your Dream Job.
After you’ve figured out what you don’t like in Step 1, visualize your dream job. What does this look like? Be specific. Is it the same industry or a different field? Does your dream job utilize your talents and what you really enjoy doing? Envision yourself doing this job. What does it feel like, that you have made it happen?

Step 3: Review Your Skills and Fill in the Gaps.
Complete a gap analysis. Where are you know in terms of skills and marketability vs what you’ll need to get your dream job. Where is the gap. What action steps will you need to take to help you get from Point A (unhappy job, feeling place) to Point B (job of your dreams). Will you need to update your resume, get a certification, earn a degree, etc. How will you pivot?

Step 4: Utilize your Contacts and Network.
Figure out who you know and how they can help you. Pick up the phone, set up a coffee date, reach out to a contact on LinkedIn. When reaching out, don’t just make it about you. Ask how you can help them too. Think about who you know and strengthen those connections.

Step 5: Don’t Give Up.
Never give up. Envision your dream job, imagine yourself doing it, and actively continue to take steps to make it happen. You are given one life, and you owe it to yourself to spend your working hours doing a job you really enjoy. Your dreams and goals are worth pursuing.
